Land of the 8 wheelers!

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

VicHung,
it was not me driving the Morris 8. I was only up to driving pedal cars at that time.
On my first day at the Kaitawa school, another pupil came up to me and asked "Hey, you fulla, what your name called?"
About all I remember of the road was the "Devil's Elbow" an extremely tight turn where some cars and all trucks and busses had to back up and take a second bight at it. The road was dirt all the way.
All mail and freight for the shop was carried on the Railways Road Services bus which had a cargo section at the rear. One weekend, a big party was to be held in the hall-come-picture theatre, the only public building in the village. Two hogsheads (56 gallon barrels) of beer were unloaded from the bus and when the organisers came to roll the second one up to the hall, it was nowhere to be found. One of the town characters, named (probably by my Father) as "Tommy the Pig" said that he had seen two Maori women rolling it away over the hill.
Tommy the Pig was too drunk to go to work for the next two weeks!
I hope to travel that road again, next time I am in Aotearoa.
