The rear overhang wouldn't be legal today.
It amazes me what was considered acceptable back in the day.
Pity it all changed.

this project appeared on the front page of the Bendigo newspaper
when they carted the loads from Bendigo to Radium Hill mine in S.A.
The load is supported on 44 gallon drums

Swishy,
On a bonneted truck does the overhang at the front have to stop at the steering wheel like a CEO or is it the front bumper?

Here are the current standard dimensions.
www.nhvr.gov.au/files/201602-0113-genera...ion-requirements.pdf
Here are the standard overhang dimensions. I presume long overhangs both back and front are subject to a permit. Sorry diagrams did not copy. Front overhang is 2.5m from front bumper. Does not matter if it is forward control or conventional. Car carriers get extra. Utes and light trucks under 4.5 tonne only get 1.2m in front of the headlights
Overhanging loads
You may carry loads that are longer or wider than the vehicle itself as long as they are within certain limits.
The rear overhang is measured from the centre of the rear axle or axle group to the extreme rear of the vehicle, including any load on the vehicle.
Overhang dimensions
(i) Rear overhang is measured from the centre of the rear axle or axle group to the extreme rear of the vehicle including any load on the vehicle.
(ii) Rear overhang must not exceed the lesser of 60% of the wheelbase or 3.7m. Rear overhang on loaded car carrier trailers, carrying vehicles on more than one deck, may be up to 4.9m, and is measured from the rear overhang line to the rear of the rearmost vehicle carried on the trailer.
(iii)
Projecting load to the rear - if a load projects more than 1.2m from the rear of a vehicle, it must carry a warning signal attached to the rear of the load.
In daylight, a warning signal is a brightly coloured flag with sides at least 300mm long.
At night, a warning signal is a red light that can be seen from a distance of at least 200m.
A load must not overhang in a way that is dangerous to people or property even if all dimension and warning requirements have been met - safety is still the main concern.
Any overhang must be contained within the maximum width limit of 2.5m.

Hi,
I came across this picture after getting side tracked looking for a local railway timetable.
Taken in 1969 the description says it is being unloaded, but it was actually being loaded for the short trip from the railway line to the Edwardes Lake Park in Reservoir, Victoria where the engine still is. Found on this site, www.merndarail.com.au/historical_photos.htm
And the cab of the truck looks like it be a contender for how short can you go.
