Mack air starter trouble

Have E6 with air starter trouble
Is connected up to get a shot of diesel, turn the key and air goes through the starter, (have very good pressure in starter tank), but the air starter doesn't seem to engage, and crank the motor.
Have no leaks, can turn the key 3-4 times before air pressure drops below 120. Use air compressor to re charge.
Has been working well for years, truck has sat for a month.
Any advice/tricks to get the starter motor to engage? or do I have to take it off the truck?

I would try putting a bit or air tool oil into the main feed line to the starter to lube up internals?

gudday m8
<1> dosse the air by pass the vanes in a whooosh
<2> dose the air starter turn ovr but wont turn the big donk ovr

if <1> the vanes could B dry ... try addn sum oil in the inlet where the diesel hose goes ....... a thin weak oil..... there should B a mist of diesel sprayed near the exhaust of the air starter
normally a off color spray on the bottom of block n sump stain

If <2> the last time the beast twaz started the centrifical force has thrown the bendix cog out to end of travel & it has jammed.... easy remedy take starter out ..... slide cog up n down
apply oil to stop the cog stik n

Will purchase some air tool oil and take off the diesel pipe, squirt it down there.
I think the Vanes are being bypassed, the air comes out in a big whoosh. No suggestion of air starter spinning,
I don't have a co pilot to turn the key, while I gaze and ponder at the problem.
Air tool oil will be first option. I'm guessing should let it soak/penetrate for a while?

The vanes will be stuck in the rotor, and probably have to take off the endplate ,and free them with a small pointed tool................they stick pretty hard sometimes.

Its a R model, the fire wall collection of wires looks messy enough! I had the valve and wires replaced a few years ago and still looks good.

By taking off the end plate, do you mean take starter motor off truck and disassemble motor, or is this something can be done with starter motor in place.
I'm guessing its a heavy bugger to take off.

I aint no expert

However a few things I would try are

1 pull the big air hose off the tank end and poor heaps of diesel down it, half a liter or more
Then try to start it
May need to try this a couple of times to fully lube the vanes etc and get the jigger going again

2 pull the starter off, it aint that heavy and I reckon its lighter than a Delco starter motor that would be there instead
Before you ripping it apart mark the end plates and also stator (the round bit inside the main casing)
Gotta make sure these all go back in the same orientation as they came out as this determibes the direction it spins
If you jigger this up the starter will spin and the bendix wont be thrown out
3 rebuild the starter, new veins seals etc and they really will swing the motor over then

Paul

And follow Swish mans advice on the starter solenoid, you should see the two 1/4 air lines going to a valve with 2 wires on it
Air lines maybe one green, one white

Your better to die trying than live on your knees begging
