Our street is a mass of pot holes that have been filled with cold mix. So much soyou can't see the original surface and is like driving on a poorly maintained dirt road. The only time it is comfortable to drive over is when Lorry is loaded and his nice new front springs do a fine job making it smooth.

Yes the cladding fiasco in Melbourne and the cracking buildings in Sydney come to mind...

I thought that the cladding and the cracking stuff ups were not from an engineering issue but lack of quality control on the cracking and importing cheap materials for the cladding that did not meet the specs.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!
The difference is not so much the engineers but accountants and trying to spread too little money too far.
The Romans had no shortage of slaves who cost nothing to buy, cost almost nothing to house and clothe and virtually nothing to feed, just bread and up to TEN LITRES of beer per day (each).
And they call it the good old days!

As it clearly states in the Building Codes of Aust. No combustible cladding or surfaces are to be used to cover the outside building envelope. Not only builders knew this but so did private building (gov. both state and local) inspectors, building engineering firms and architects who approved this crap.
In my trade this is one reason I always tell potential clients about this no compliant stick on stonemasonry a lot of spec home builders are trying flog in new house builds.
On the concrete, engineers specified poor quality concrete mixes and then assumed it was properly slump tested onsite.
Did you know that Qld is the only state in Aust. that properly register building engineers.
