Gday All
Just to get you thinking what Auto box would be good to go with a slant 6 in my AT4 just ideas for later in life as the legs are showing signs of wear with every birthday. Cheers Baz

Baz,
Maybe you are not old enough to remember the Flintstones TV cartoon series from the 1960's. The propulsion system on their car would give you leg trouble in later life.!

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

As you seem to be making up a driver not a heavy worker I would imagine the standard car auto would do just fine. The 318 Valiants would have stressed the auto more than your slant six and I have not heard of them giving any unusual problems over the years.

Just tailshaft shorten, maybe mount re positioning and some pedal mods. Putting a gear stick direct onto the box through the floor would be easier than any column arrangement. What about the old push-button auto???

I did a heavy 1942 Dodge 4x4 wih just the car auto and it was great.

As the guys suggest, either the 727 or 999 slosh boxes in cast iron should suit quite well, tough old boxes if your not too worried about weight. Must have been swags of them laying around at one stage or another, unless been scrapped.

There was an auto option, though only seen one personally. was a 318. Don't know if it was a 904, or a 727 though. Floor shift tower looked like it came from a bus.

Do not know if you would find any here but the next model after those mentioned had a lock up torque converter. Ex Dodge USA. and they were used behind Cummins diesels as well petrol so stout enough for most use. Would have to go rummage for model numbers.
Cheers Steve
Updated. My have my thoughts crossed, Chrysler added lockup from 1978 but not to all. After that they also added overdrive.
Bottom of the article adds ID for lockup transmissions.
