I take it the M plate is for modified vehicles ?

That is a smart idea to get the mods recorded on the file the police will see on their screen in the car

yes M is for Modified. Mainly post 1948 vehicles which have been modified enough to need an engineer to ok them.
Having lived through a pandemic I now understand all the painting of fat people on couches!
