Now that Paccar, Volvo and MAN are doing very well with home brand motors it is only a matter of time that Cummins gets left behind in truck motors, so I guess they are now desperately looking for other markets

.Last installment of your 671 rebuild..............
Forgot to mention about the cam and balance shaft thrust washers .........
Because the timing gears are helical cut, there is an end thrust created by rotation........
This end thrust alters depending on the rotational direction of the shafts............
So the thrust washers have to be placed correctly according to the build up, or there
will be a problem down the track ............

A couple of pointers about engine tune up that every body has known for about
80 years or so ................
If you dont have a height gauge, just set your verniers to 1.460 (or what ever is correct
for the job). and use this to set the height from the injector body (near the gauge index hole)
to the spring retainer............
Also when you set the valve clearance and injector height , put a chalk mark on the rocker
arm ,........that keeps a record of the settings completed..................
To set the 1st injector to the full fuel position, back off the slow speed adjustment about 1/2 inch,
that allows the govenor lever to go to the full fuel position with out any great resistance..........
THEN pull the return spring around to keep the gov lever in the full fuel position ............
that leaves your two hands free to set the racks ..............
End of story...................

I am led to believe that the reason for different timing settings for different injectors is that as they need more fuel as it goes up in injector size the injectors need a longer stroke

Because of this the stroke must start earlier to still fire at the correct time yet gathers more fuel along the way

So if any of this is true does that mean that they advanced timed injectors are the same injectors and just have the stroke longer with a different label??

Curious mind wondering here

Me led to believe
U had a choice of the timin gear set 1 tooth differece to either have performance or econimy
th@ xplains why we had 2 new trucks in 1974 both same build up n 8V-71 (318hp)
Atkinson did its job ..... but the White Road Commander got up n screeem n leave the big A for ded
a good Jimmy diesel will either make revs or loose revs n not hang about

If you read the workshop book it says from one size injector to such and such size set as standard
The other is from a bigger injector upwards

They dont run right when set on advance for a standard set injector, this I know from my experience
When I enquired about why for so it was explained by the fella that was in Bayswater that wrecks and rebuilds GM's (20 plus years ago) Rob Sinclair rings a bell but might have that wrong

Anyway from what they told me that was the reason why

That fella might not even be there anymore

.Mrs.............
I would say ............the injector timing tool (height gauge ) is used to set the point that injection begins,
So many degrees BTDC ...or what ever ..........
Not much to do with the amount of fuel that is injected................
That is controlled by the internals of the injector as it is built up and is measured in
cubic millilitres ,(at full throttle ) as per the injector tag..............

If this is what you were asking........i would say no................
But in saying that once you have a diffrent tag ....that means the injector build up is diffrent
even though the physical look is the same............
