Dont know if anyone remembers but years ago ,some big floats had steering, and a guy used to ride in a small cabin under the deck and in front of the float axle rhs wheels.,steering the float......Wouldnt want the float to go over a roundabout or traffic island.......but I suppose the guy steering was supposed to avoid that.

xspanrman Thanks, that powered dolly in your first pic was the KIWI one I remembered. I seem to remember it got smashed in a rollover? or was that something else?

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

I reckon that Kiwi jigger doesn't contribute any motive power. It only needs a small motor to make air for the brakes and hydraulics for the steering.

NMP It did the job, but I would not like being the rear driver.

Is the steerer wearing a beanie? Does that count as PPE?

We can date it as no earlier than 1963.

They would have been lost if somebody asked about OH&S, they would never of heard of it.

Back around 1988 I did blue light escort work on a few big loads, a couple of which had R-send steers men. I think the MCG light towers had them, but my job was not to escort but to part the waters. And quite recently happen to watch some mob moving precast concrete overpass spans out of Bendigo, the R-send was electronically or otherwise remotely controlled but to get out onto high street a bloke was hiding in under the span on the back axel group manually and I would say frantically steering to try and avoid knocking power poles down and climbing kerbs etc.
Couple of blokes on foot, lots of shouting, and a short back and fill then off they went at a flying 20kph, bloke just lounging under the beam, work done. Smart idea, but oh&S probably didn't fancy the possible risk.

Bloke on the back of the Brambles pic seems to be in shorts and thongs.......not that long ago ,standard truckie uniform was a blue singlet, shorts and thongs, depending on summer or winter ,maybe a shirt.
