Hi everyone
Does anyone have a remedy for squeaky brakes?
The old bus sounds awful when slowing at roundabouts, lights etc. Its particularly noisy when dropping below approx 15 kms/hr
The pads have plenty of life left in them.
Cheers

Usually just a build up of brake dust in the drum

Old bus?..is it a Daimler or an AEC?...they always had very sqeaky brakes ,I thought it was because the drums were so wide ,like 8" wide on some busses.

Used to have a lot of trouble with the tag axle brakes on the Dennings ....had 7" brakes on a single ...one time the wheel locked at 70mph ,and the tyre shed a cap into the floor of the toilet while an old woman was in it.....She tried to sue B*****m ,until the lawyers found out he was a bankrupt ,and none of his insurances were paid.

Hi JOHN.K
Its the front axle that is noisy. I changed the rear axle to a no4 Eaton.

Maybe worthwhile removing the drum and wash it out using water to get rid of any dust then grab a rasp and roughen up the linings and some emery cloth and roughen up the drum. Might or might not work but if you don't try you wont know.

Shoe material makes a big difference in this department

Also worn pivots or busted springs

And hotspots on the drums. Rubbing the friction area with glass paper, sometimes breaks the noise inducing glazed spots.
