The pond in Newland Reserve (Newland Avenue, Milperra) was converted to such after the site was used as a quarry from the start of the Soldiers Settlement in 1917. In the early years, men would come on a horse and dray and use its contents to patch up local roads.
During World War 2 (pictued) the quarry was enlarged greatly and the ironstone was used to help the war efforts. Today the pond is a picturesque feature of suburban Milperra.
