This shows an almost straight line graph of motor accident deaths plunging from around 230 per 100,000 vehicles in 1925 to only 4 today. We have reached the statistically lowest possible death rate with humans operating machinery.

You will see that the reporting has changed from a number of vehicles base, which is not very useful, to number of kilometres travelled which is the real picture. eg The UK figures for accidents for number of vehicles is much better than Australia but accidents per kilometre has them performing badly because of fewer kilometres travelled (and exposure to risk).

Imagine the carnage if our Fatality Figures per population & vehicles were the same as the 1970 numbers..:(

Our population has a little more than doubled but the number would be 7863 road deaths per annum.

Or 21.54 PER DAY!

In 1970 there were 80 Deaths per 100,000 Vehicles.. According to Langs table..

According to the ABS there's 20.1 Million Registered Cars in Australia..
the same fatality rate Works out to be 16,080 Deaths per Year ... Or 44 per day....

44 per day is jut about 11 times the current average.

Stunning to think that it was accepted as normal.

Lots of people were dying of various diseases, especially preventable ones such as related to smoking and industrial nasties, not to mention our keenness to throw ourselves into any ones war.

Look at the bicycle deaths - endangered species?

And the motorcycle brigade have only just got into negative figures - perhaps they should adopt the ride easy easy riders approach?
