I thought the D series all had what I call a "suit case" gear box, they unbolted the top off and were very flat as the lay shaft was beside the main shafts and the one here looks like a normal type of box

PMG or Telecom had some mid 1970’s with small 8 speed range change box. ( Eaton )?
Some Fiats had a similar unit.
Not sure if this is the type you mention Paul.
