I have identified this Mercedes engine as an OM65 which appears to have been available between mid '30's and late '50s

But where did it come from and how did it get into my 1911 Dennis fire engine? Any information or leads to a donor engine/parts would be most welcome.

mammoth asks How did it get into my 1911 Dennis?
With a shoehorn I think, there is not much space around it.:woohoo:
But it would have given many years extra life to the fire engine.
I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

The original post was made in the FF thread but I moved into its own thread as it was interesting enough that it will have a life a of its own.

The installation is very professional as not a single cut has been made to the original chassis and the flywheel housing looks seamless. It would appear that the project was not quite completed as the water connections have yet to be made. Again, the radiator would pass for original but is not. My ambition is to acquire an original 4 cylinder T head motor for it but in the meantime getting the diesel running would be next best thing.
This was one of two imported by NSW Fire Brigade landing in January 1912. One went to Sydney Central and the other to Newcastle. (NSWFB continued a chassis number typo from Dennis on their records and did not differentiate which was which when allocating fleet numbers) It appears that both were sold by 1930. Only thing I can think of is that this one was being prepared as a funeral or special events vehicle in the brigade workshops. It is now the oldest surviving Dennis fire engine in the world so needs some respect. There is one a few months younger in England which is good running condition but a different model..
