It will if you are putting massive force on the crank and thrust bearing .........thats why I say check for crank endfloat ,,,should be some endfloat  ..........Ive seen real damage done to cranks and blocks from forcing gearboxes in with the housing bolts.

I tend not to hold the key on for that long when I'm trying to unstick an engine. Other than that, I agree that it's turning.
