Bedford J1 Chassis Support?

What is this bar that goes across the chassis rails, directly above the diff?
I notice it is not on many Bedford J1's that I see online.
It can't be for support as it is too thin, spring steel and has bends in it.

bolted in so my instinct is not factory original.
Added on by previous owner for some obscure reason?

Be it firearms or V8 engines, the question is not "why should you have them?"
, but "who are you to demand that I justify them?"

Spare tyre doesn't sit that high or that far forward.
Good thought though.

That's a good point. Factory parts are usually riveted.

My thoughts would be along vibration damping, it may have had something such as a mini mixer or some other powered device mounted on the tray that would cause vibration in the chassis bows, it is well made and not a farmer Fred job, so it there for a well thought out reason.

Maybe these holes in the rear cross member are a hint

Then again, maybe not

If it was a delivery truck, perhaps a sack truck slid in there under the tray?, and the handles rested on the flat.

A few things are puzzling me.

There are no bump stops.
The U bolts are on a unusual angle.

The bracket only has one bolt. (so it could rotate under load or something.)

Apart from that, I have no idea.

I have removed the bump stops to paint the chassis.
The Bedford J1 does have an angle to the U bolts from factory and these do look standard to me.
Only one bolt per side, but they weren't going to move. I broke both bolts when I removed the bar :)
Thanks for the ideas
