True Lang but back the era of the B model they were still using P 6 Perkins and they certainly were not the best starting motors about from my experience with them
B model started in 53 and went to 66
I guess we need to think of the era
Gardner were good as were some other makes but they were fairly low on go compared to Mack
If I am wrong Mack never would of sold, they were probably 2 - 3 times the price of a similar Pomy truck
So I guess one of three things is true or bits of all three
1) Pomy trucks were really that bad
2) Mack trucks were really that good
3)truck drivers had more money than sense and threw money away on Macks
Im guessing a bit of 1 and 2
Even on road train work the B model cut times in half
Andersons were Pomy truck people, yet Mack was so good they set up Mack Australia and built them here
Anyway, history tells us a story
And yes Pomy motors got a lot lot better, but it was to little to late

Think design criteria and marketing had an influence. English designed trucks for their conditions, then offered them for sale to other markets. Some did perform well, often with modifications.
Mack designed trucks to operate almost worldwide, their performance record did the selling for them.

The pommy trucks were always slow ,as 30 mph was max in UK ,and it was impossible to get faster diff ratios..........by the time the pommy trucks caught up on speed ,there were endless strikes in UK and you couldnt get trucks or parts,..........There used to be lots and lots of B61 single drives with 711 motors.and quad boxes ,then lots of R600 bogies ,but very few single drives..
