Had a phone call today from a fella that reads the forum, gudday Dan
Anyway Dan has been reading the forum for many years and I know Dan but never new he read the forum
I shifted Dan's old Ford excavator a while ago, pretty sure I bunged pictures up on the forum
Anyway Dan called today with a question about F7 Volvo or a V6 Benz
Anyway the long and the short of it is he wants to toodle along at 100 km/h with a single deck crate on the back with cattle and keep up with the traffic
He currently has a Hino but it's legs are a little short and 80 - 85 km/h is about all it is good for
Anyway Dan has thoughts about a V6 Benz or a F7 Volvo but was wondering if these would have enough power or speed to achieve this
Dan has a soft spot for the Benz breed of truck but was not sure if they would be up to the task
Anyway, anyone with some knowledge to share on this please feel free to share
Thinking something along this line of trucks
Paul

The F7 Volvo is an update of the venerable F86. If the gearing is right they will hold 100 clicks on the flat but hills are another matter - not enough power going up and pathetic exhaust brake going down. Pretty easy to maintain but most by now would be pretty ratty. FL7 was a step up with a gear for every occasion, comfy, more power and parts situation better. By that time the rust treatment for the cab was better too. Our local council is still running one which has been on quarry deliveries since when they were a new thing. FL7 is my recommendation but if he can stretch to an FL10 he will be very happy.
The photo is of an FL not an F

Why such a narrow choice, there is a whole pile of Japanese brands that are a mile ahead of both of those, Benz and Volvo are complicated and expensive to fix, and would be both dead last on my list for a cheap truck.

Re the Japanese Truck proposition.
The bus has a Isuzu 6BG1 turbo, 6 speed overdrive, with a ~ 5.8 something diff. (I've never quite worked it out). It's 8 ton.
Easily cruises at 100, 4.6k's per litre. Tops out at about 115 which I think is on the governor. No problems with parts.

First thing I d look at for a farm truck is " Is the radiator set high?"........Euros with the radiator scraping the ground may be good on bitumen roads .

Our old Lorry the Hino would travel at 100kph on the flat but dropped off on the hills. I believe ours was more a town truck rather than highway. But with no turbo it served us well n I only sat on 90kph anyway.

Thanks for the replies everyone
Dan sounded like he has his heart set on some European type of trucks
I do agree about the Jap trucks They are great performers and cheap to repair
Anyway I passed this information onto Dan and hope it yields results for him
