A cup is about a 1/4 of a litre, I wonder how much is out of a big old truck motor ??

This can holds 750ml. I will be watching it closely n gauge what's happening after the first 1000 k mark. There is a 1/2" bore clear tube with a ball valve on the end. I mounted mine behind the front bumper bar exiting via the plastic sump cover. Easy to get at.
it's generally thought each 10000 k to drain but I will each 5000 for a while. Engine condition can make a difference ad to how often.
I don't know if my engine had a PVC valve. I just followed the instructions to remove original tube from rocker cover n join that to the can using a short tube. Then a new longer tube from can to rocker cover.

Paul, all to do with the modern highly strung light diesels vs manufacturer attempts to meet anti pollution regs without using adblue. (bad for marketing & etc) All sorts of opinions of what to do to stop em blowing up and a catch can is a common low intervention one.

I have drained about 200ml from mine in 20,000K's. 2014 79 series with 250K's on it.
If I put one on the Inter, it would need to hold a gallon LOL.
Jarrod.

I assume if you blocked off the EGR you wouldnt need one of these?

If you block the EGR you would probably develop a few gasket leaks

I believe the EGR redirects exhaust gas into the intake reducing emissions but eventually blocking the intake with soot. EGR blanking plates or electronic additional wire shutoff solve this problem. Nothing to do with catch cans. A very high percentage of 4x4 owners have blanking plates or electronic EGR shut-off wire in the circuit. Not legal but nobody can tell. My diesel specialist shop "don't advise" their customers about blanking plates but give everyone a little bit of tin to be fitted by any home handyman in 15 minutes when they pay for their service.
The catch can is different and gathers oil vapour from the crankcase which is normally redirected straight back into the intake. They have been doing this since the 30's but as the engine wears the carbon in the cylinders builds up fouling pistons, valves and plugs. If you can stop a cupful of oil being poured into the intake between every service it has got to keep everything cleaner for very little cost.

The exhaust gases cook that oil mist adding to the carbon/sludge build up in the intake. The catch can is to reduce the oil mist going into the manifold. If you have ever pulled a sledged up manifold you will see just how oily that sludge is.
The other danger with breathers is with worn engines and good oil carry over, good hot day and a runaway. Hi Aces were good for that.
