My Dodge ute had those tapered rear axles for the brake drum/hub. I used to undo the nut on the end of the axle slightly and drive up/down a gutter a few times.
The end of the axle housing was machined to accept a bearing , the bearing had been moving up/down and it had worn the end of the axle housing into a oval shape . I used some shims on the upper and lower worn section and that bodge repair lasted for 10 years.
