Forgotten facts about worm drive axles .

Worm drive axles must be adjusted correctly ,or the  bronze  gear will score and pieces will tear out of the bronze .to form a sharp edge on the gear ..... The gears must be set so that oil is drawn into the contact face  ....as the bronze wears ,this contact moves closer to the leading edge of the gear  ,and  when full contact occurrs ,oil is scraped off the gear faces ,and seizures occur....So gears  must be reset before this happens ,or the  familiar gouged and scored bronze results.
