Jimbo,
Sorry to get "off topic", but the W-Model behind the Norgate K-Series looks familiar too. A mate of mine bought a '74 "W" many years ago, think it was one of two that originally carted milk in far East Gippsland, one of which was known I think as "Trigger".
It was a very short wheelbase, originally a 6-71 GM, 15 spd, Torsion Bar susp, malco front hubs. With a dark brown stripe, it could nearly be the one in the photo!

Regards,
Adrian.

Adrian,
S2 behind the Norgate looks to have a V903 in it. So probably not :(

RE: the Chassis # build date etc
Now all this is iz sink n in n cummin back 2 me
in 1974 we had a 100% kw fleet of 5 trucks (big deal LOL)
we broke the main leaf on the KW single axle drive with the R170 diff
we went to KW to get a new leaf or complete spring n were told nun available
so @ th@ stage we thort "well stuff U KW"
n then went on the buy a new White RoadCommander n a Atkinson
@ th@ era there waz heaps of work on n every body very bizzy in all sorts of life
In 2008 I waz told th@ the reason there were shortage of parts etc for KW! were th@ everytime a container load of bits from the U.S. went to the warf to go to Australia, everything waz sent to Vietnam n Oz missed out
now ifn we were told the situation way back when, we mighta been able to live with it
LOL
So I'm guessin th@ the above yella truck could have been ordered as U say early on n waitn on components for the build of the beast took time
LOL

do U think I'm near the mark?

Re: our broken spring on KW

we went on to weld up the main leaf with Magna Alloy rods n stihl holds today (now we weld many springs th@ break)

to weld a broken spring leaf
U need to yank spring pak apart
'V' out both sides of break with the RA Grinder
lay the broken leaf on its next M8
clamp the spring leaf to hold it in place
apply a bit of warm to area U B welding (not tooo hot)
Grind flat n smooth
do same to flip side
it duz take a bit of tension out of spring
but tiz good with us as we only do lo centre of G loads

the last few we have welded, we only use the common garden variety of mig or stik rod/wire

Even in the KW manual it sez U can weld m

Swishy,
Reckon between us we're gettin' there. Hadn't thought about WHY there would be a hold up on components but the Vietnam situation makes sense. Guess there was a final big push there through the early 70's before it all fell in a heap in '75.

'part from that I'm curious as to the role of a single drive in a heavy haulage mob - please explain :)

RE: single drive in a heavy haulage
many moons ago we were cart n extendable semi loads of strutual steel
the shorter the primeover the longer the load B 4 all BS of permits n escorts etc
Have n a short wheelbase makes for good manouvreability on sites
the Bummper to kingpin is about 3m (10')
with a turning circle less than most cars with out the trailer on, did cum in handy
also many customers had small machines (eg, TD9,Cat D4, Kato 350, J15, 10RB etc) as well as the bigger machines
n if they needed cartn up country twaz the ideal little beast to get er dun with out the extra wheels etc
now tilttrays R do n all the work

;)
