The Bosch has the brushes with the regulator if it is built in, but if it is external and the light is flickering, try tapping the alternator with a hammer while it is running, sounds like sticky brushes if the light is flickering, and if that fixes it, it will only be temporary, you'll need new brushes.

New relugator (so new brushes inc)
Can't take to a sparky to test coz the bloke that calls himself auto electrician around here has gone away for a couple weeks.

May have to visit the wrecker. He doesn't have much gear, but he does like buyin in falcons ... they outnumber all others put together in his yard, so he might have something that'll fit :-/

An inline fuse ... out in the open, got rained on etc.
Wiped the corrosion off ... voila` all good.

Now the conundrum ... with 6 days to go before the Marrabel run ... do I crack open the spare engine for a valve ... or even the head ... or do I just swap in the complete spare motor ... ?

Complete spare engine cheapest and easiest if the engine is a known quantity. IMO.

I would just get the existing head looked at

A lot will depend on what is found and how deep your pocket is I guess
And your location as well will play a part in how it goes as well
