You're right Oldfella, backing in over a hump in the driveway was a real challenge, many a gate post has been a victim of this and got a nudge sideways. ;D ;D

Trust me

Whose trucks were those? And which mill were they carting to?

I remember Honeycombes Haulage had a mob of Inters on cane. And a bit later - NQ Roadfreighters had contracts around Proserpine.

...peter severi was a cameron driver and told the tale of how when the spreads came in they could stick another ton on their kenworth 6V71 S models (usually pulling a pan).. but that, unfortunately was the beginning of the end for the S models as being a force on the highways...

they just didn't like that extra weight and the drivers were by this stage eyeballing the bigger rigs with their 335's and 8V71's.. but, once again...that's progress :) :)....

i guess a lot of trucks around this era would have also become redundant almost overnight :'( :'( :( :(..

this is actually 1" under a spread, which allowed my dad to cart more.. i don't know the in's and out's but didn't a spread and a tandem have different weights along the eastern states?

was a 36' single axle my dad stretched in the late 70's before i was born.

Pretty sure I have posted this before, so apologies if i have-

The old man built this from bits many years ago. Took the old bogie suspension into Krueger when they were still on the Melbourne Geelong road, they didn't want to know I think. Then he coaxed the fellow he had working for him into building it, first they made a gooseneck, then extended the frame and made it a drop deck, then they cut down the 9 foot rockers and made a bit of a spread instead of the 9 foot.
It was still a strap trailer, (theres another topic for discussion!) but it did a great job, for years. He used to carry about six spare wheels on it, as he used to run old re grooves, or secondhand tyres, never ever bought a new tyre except for the steer! And that was only when good secondhandies weren't to be found...
But basically it was a rubbish old trailer, that would still be a handy jigger today.
if you look closely you can see the little toy monkey on the right hand rear, did a heck of a lot of miles that monkey!
Cheers
Richard
