Good work Swish, I remember that thing getting around years ago........
Anyone remember or(better still) have Pictures of the gadget that looked a bit like that.
BUT used to cart a 40' container. With the Driver sitting in underneath the Box...........
I think It was based on a Bus chassis, & had a horozontal motor (I think)
"Be who you are and say what you feel...
Because those that matter...
don't mind...
And those that mind....
don't matter." -

Hayseed, that tilt tray was built by Grove Towing Equipment in Sydney later the Gold Coast. Used to be pictures of it on their website, but seeing as the company doesn't exist anymore, neither does the web site.

I remember that Hayseed, I think that Sandersons owned it and they were bought out by Johnstons Transport in Smithfield. I heard about 12 months ago that it was parked up back of their yard

The 'amount' of spread on the trailer behind the Mack is what was was to become the max allowed post the outlawing of the 'wide spread' arrangement.
I cant recall what the measurement was - but what is shown in that pic was common for when old spreads were converted back to the new legal requirment.
I dont think there was any axle loading increase over a closed bogie - but this concept was chosen as an easy fix because most of the original wide spead suspension components could be reused. And the extra new bits required were sold as 'kits' but the respective trailer manafactures.
I think doing it that way meant the rear most axle dint have to be moved - and by having the 'short spread' had the effect (weight distrubtion) of a closed bogie which typically had the trailing axle set further forward. IE: the leading axle finished up being roughly where the leading axle on a closed bogie would normally be.
That sort of axle spacing dissapeared for a while but has now come back on some 'B' trailers - usually tankers and tippers.
Hope that makes sense?

That's all interesting stuff eh! I like the idea of a little bit of spread, just seems to be ideal for stability you'd think.
This is not really on-subject, but I like the pic...
This is a "kellogs" trailer, it used to have written "football meatpies kangaroos and Holden cars" right down the side.
I think these trailers started life in the fifties or sixties, this one was pretty flash as it took seven cars, which was big time in the day. In this pic it had been rebuilt (again) and it had single 10.0020's on it, with home made rims... Was a mongrel skinny thing to fit the car between when loading or trying to get out the door.. I'd like to see more pics of the Kellogs trailers, if anyone has any. Then again, I'd like to see more pictures of any old widespreads too, just like the topic says hey!
The old 190 in front was a ripper jigger, had a 471 in it, was a really genuine old truck, we didnt have it long. My girlfriend at the time is sitting on the bullbar, i did have her for a long time but thats another story!
Swishy's car park is great eh... gee it must have been different to drive... what the hell is a UFO anyway? (truck, that is...)
Cheers
Richard

Richard, I thought a UFO was an Unsatified Fuso Owner, but I reckon old mates bus chassis Leyland probobly didn't have the around town diff in it if it was a real UFO, maybe UFO on a long down hill.
