Hi all, I am looking at purchasing a 1979 SAR day cab with a GM 2 stroke and 9 speed ranger in it. It is reasonably tidy, has no turntable and has been down rated to HR. Its only a short wheelbase. It is reasonably tidy but needs the dash tidying up as is all original and guages missing ect. No real history on the driveline but runs ok. Has has power steer rebuilt and front end. Is currently registered and has a current COI.

I dont know a lot about these trucks, some people tell me to keep away from the GM but some say they are good.

What sort of price range does anyone think they are worth??

G/day pockets the sar is a bit of an icon and the sellers know this,i reckon somewhere between 10k and 20,thats a big range i know but as usual the general condition is a big factor ,goes or not spec gm with a nullabour 9 speed diff size but i've seen them go for way more than i ever thought they worth, depends how keen u are and what it meens to u to have it, rest assured if he advertises it, it will sell if he prices it right cheers col.

Thanks Col, Indications I have had is that he is wanting in the mid 20's for it. From the research I have done so far it is all telling me the same $10 - $20K. I was thinking of making the offer in this range. I agree that that they are becoming an Icon, I am actually buying this truck for a purpose but in the same time having a collectable truck.

Thanks Andrew

My biggest concern was the GM 2 stroke as people tell me to keep away but others say they are good. I suppose it all depends on what they are worth to rebuild or just repower with a cummins.

Is there anything in particular that anyone can tell me about the GM diesels and what to look for??

Thanks Andrew

what do you want to do with the truck?if your not going to work the thing id reccomend keeping the detroit in it for authenticity.they are a very misunderstood engine, people bag them because they have made a mess of many driveways.theyre an old design engine and theyve put many a different brand of engine to shame out on the highway in their day.please dont be to hastily with peoples advice,if the thing starts and runs without any hassles, why do an engine swap?.how messy are the air box drains?how hard is it to start?oil pressure?when you start it,as soon as you have normal oil pressure, give it full throttle breifly,if you have pre ignition(death rattles)the engines getting tired.try these simple tests under cold start conditions and it will help you determine the condition of your engine.hope this helps you.

Im not too sure what GM it is. It is only going to do some local running around, my long term goal is too set up a trailer for my race car behind it rather than pulling car trailers behind the 4wd.

I had no intention to swap the GM was only thinking of if and when it has a problem what I do with it and costs involved. All the things to consider I suppose. I was doing around 20 hours a week local until a few weeks ago with no hassall.

I know the supercharger was rebuilt in Brisbane a couple of years ago by the mob that do the bandag bullit tow truck. Apart from that dont know any history on it.

So if I check out what oil is in the drain of the air cleaners? and give it a full throtle when cold to see what it does?

G'day pockets. My 2 cents for what it's worth is 10 would be a great price if you could get for that and 20 would be closer to the mark. BUT as has been said, it depends on the condition AND again as has been said here before a truck is only worth what someone is willing to pay.It is only when buyer and seller agree on a price that the value of that vehicle is determined at that point in time. 6 months down the track the value may have changed.

As far as the GM goes the mob with the Bandang Bullet are called CPF Detroit in Salisbury, just off Beaudesrt RD. From reports I have heard they are ok and if you are serious about buying the truck get in contact with them and they should be able to give you some advice. The couple of times I have been in there they have been helpful.

Anyway thats my 2 cents worth.

Thanks Krusy, you are right in saying it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I have been in touch with the owner this arvo and unfortunately people have been in his ear saying it is worth big bucks but I think I got through to him what it really is worth.

As much as I like the truck I am still buying it for a purpose and I got to consider what I can get for the same money as there seems to be a lot more truck for my money available on the market today.
