Ok I thought I'd start a thread about " the first time "..
The first time you actually got to drive a truck.
What was the first truck you ever actually drove??
In a paddock,on the road whatever..
Utes don't count.
Let's see where this goes....
I'll start..
TK Beddy tray with a perkins on a railway access road.
I thought I was the MAN!!
I was a bit younger then......

Good on ya Cam..
Good idea for a thread....
Well for me.....
Torquay Speedway an old Jialbar Ford water truck.
While back now, i think it was yellow, from memory.
The Ol Man used to put a coin in the throttle to hold it at a steady pace while i watered the Speedway track.
So i basically pointed it..
I reckon it was 67 / 68 or there abouts.
(Big Timmy might be able to help me out here, it was before the Ol Man took out the Production car Championship)
First semi, C line Inter C160 Cummins 5 x 2 Ballarat - Geelong in around 1970, Ol man as co pilot...
(i was 10)

Ok, I!ll bite, 8 yrs old, maple Leaf Chev carting square bales with LH International bale loader, can still remember the old man yelling abuse at me if i missed the bale on a corner into the chute, & if it went between the truck & the loader to go under the drive wheels, (20ft tray fitted to a stretched chassis), I really copped it. a couple of hay seasons later, 52 side whacker ford with a 2 speed diff, & New Holland R.H. loader, I was in heaven as master Gilly, eventually allowed to drive through the gates etc to the hay stack Then came the F600 with the 282, Wow.

Inter Mark 3 (Army 1969) when I was doing National Service, yes in was taught to drive the Army way + a number of other Army trucks. I was in RAEME and because we were a workshop based we had to do twice a year a driver refresher training course in the bush following the Burdekin River, away about a week and had a ball, beat doing test runs around camp and town

The first truck I drove on the road was a early 70's acco bogie drive, 5 speed, done 85km/h flat out. From there 2 years later I stepped staight into a 1990 western star 444 cummins, 15 speed ranger with a double road train with my mates dad, we 2 up drove it too Darwin and back, mind you I had never drove a semi at this stage and didnt even have my road train licence either...... lol

The first truck I drove was an AL160 Inter. My brother & I picked up sticks & rocks in the new spud paddocks. We also had a C1800, perkins, 5 speed for the spuds out of the paddock & market run. I recall the AL having a 2 speed diff & used to jump out of 2nd. We were about 12 or 13, early '80's. It was the best job, driving a truck & burning stuff. 30 years later,I still like driving trucks & burning stuff.

First time I drove a truck on the road was driving from the farm I worked at into Bordertown to meet the local copper to do my test. No L plate log books in the early 80s. Was a yellow ex highways dept bedford, 300ci petrol, j5?

Well I was about 20 years old and had been ITCHING to drive. A good friend who at the time was a mate of my sister and brother-in-law's had sold his immaculate T Line and pig and started to work for Camsons Transport in Sydney (a company that is celebrating its 60th year this year) and after a few years driving for them had moved into allocations. He knew my passion so got me over one afternoon and fired up a T650 Kenworth semi tipper and took me for a run loaded up to Boral Masonary at Prospect, explaing the revs and gears on the way, Big Cam Cummins with a 9 speed.
I was in awe
After he tipped off he got me into the drivers seat to steer it back and just stop and think for a minute.........still possessing a childhood obsession to drive and my first steer was in a massive (at the time) Kenworth, nothing like I had ever dealt with before. Took off in 3rd, missed 4th and rolled down the driveway to a stop. He just got me to steer and told me when to press the clutch as he held my hand on the gearstick and explained the cogs to me. We went for a 20 minute drive and apart from the gearbox I was spot on with the rest of it.
That one drive and my future was set
