Well they are talking about "since 1969" so it sounds like it is early 70s.

Guys
thanx for the input
Me BullDog Bulletin sez Oct 1975 the article twaz written
I dunno much about tri drives as me thinks I've never seen one in the flesh
they mainly used in road train territory I'd guess
with single steer up front @ times the beast might wanna go straight ahead

Well assuming those Macks were built in 74 or 75, it would put them just ahead of Atkinson. Steering might have been a problem, with tri drive and one steering.

The ONLY time the steering would become a problem, would be if it was loaded incorrectly.
This would only be noticable at slow speed.
With the drilling rig fitted, then the weights would about the same at all times, so cant really see a problem.

I just wonder why they didnt go for an 8x4 chassis in this case. Does anyone know what became of these units ?
The big 5 axle Atkinson shown on the front cover of my book actually started out as an 8x4 but pulling two or three trailers needed extra traction at jump ups and was converted to tri drive. With "volume loading" regulations in Queensland and big Kirkstall front axles Noel Herrod was able to put plenty of weight on the front end and told me it steered the same as any other truck.

Steering can B a problem in soft ground, greasy roads, where the front steer break grip normally @ slow speed makeing a turn etc
well it duz with our close cuple dolly's which would/could perform like a tri drive in the steering dept

So how many tri drive or tri with pusher did Shambles have?

Right about here I should ad sum pix
