Volvo N12 clutch pedal stuck up

More

Hi All, I am looking at a 1975 N12 tandem drive tipper. Not sure what the gearbox is. The clutch pedal is stuck up, very hard. No give at all, but the gears go into gear OK with the motor not running.

Any ideas on the like culprit, before I call a mechanic? Is it just a dud slave cylinder or is the fork in the bell housing likely to have come adrift?

Thanks, Erik

If it was a bus the clutch would be stuffed if with the engine running and the peddle goes hard it has run out of linings!

Thanks, but that doesn't feel like what it is, but I haven't played with Volvos before.

BTW Did you get my PM?

From memory I thought they had an air assist gadget on them.
Cant remember whether the air moved the hydraulic or the other way round.
Maybe there is a clevis seized there somewhere?

Would have thought they had a 16sp zf in them originally but many were turfed out and a roadranger fitted.
The cabovers had a swith on the stick and another on the dash.
Could well be wrong though...its a long time ago

Hmm, there are massive air leaks, because the guy has pinched some airlines for another truck, so perhaps you are onto something? Anyone else know?

If you know are lines are missing...might be an idea to reinstate them and get the air system up into the green?
Maybe get the mechanic out for a few hours if you are unsure of the workings;

I pulled a gearbox out of an N12 and replaced it last year. It was rebuilt when it didn't need it as there was an electrical issue that wasn't diagnosed too well.

There is an air cylinder in the bellhousing that operates the clutch.

I'd take Chocs advice and replace the airlines and see how it is then.

Now we are getting there, they are hydraulic controlled air clutch, so no air no clutch and the pedal will be rock hard
