don't mind...
And those that mind....
don't matter." -

Always been told what grandad said... But it's like B double trailers... Which one is the A trailer and which one is the B trailer... I've always classed the lead trailer as the B trailer and the rear trailer on its own as an A trailer... Like in a road train set up... But the industry norm is the other way around...

You might Laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at you because you're all the same

The fact is they are interchangeable.

In this world of east and west - English English and American English plus local variations in Australia with a mix of the two we all know what somebody means.

The Poms have long called the noisy bit a motor and the slang for the whole car is a motor. The Americans tend to call the noisy bit the engine but there are lapses and they often call their cars automobiles or autos. Interestingly the Americans go motoring on a Sunday afternoon like the English and not automobiling and 90% of the time in conversation call their machines cars - short for motor car.

I have an Australian WW2 vehicle manual giving the English and American equivalents. Even in the 40's Australian car-speak was half of each.

Gearbox = Transmission
Strangler = Choke
Sparking Plugs = Spark Plugs
Dynamo = Generator
etc etc

Even the Poms have developed and they use choke, spark plugs now but still use gearbox and dynamo.

I think it probably is an argument about semantics and neither engine or motor advocates are on firm ground. We all know what you mean.

I know what you mean Lang about Pommy terminology. IT sometimes takes me 4 times of reading the same sentence to understand what they are on about. After my recent battle with the carby and dizzy it did improve my slight understanding of what they are almost saying in English.
Body parts of cars in the UK is a 'wing' is a mudguard.

My daughter, at the age of about 10 or 12, made up a word that I think covers this situation:-

She would say "It is all a bit CONFUSTERATING"

In case you can't work that out, it is a combination of Confusing and Frustrating!

In parts of South America, and in a recent translation from German that recently appeared on this forum, sparkplugs are called "candles"

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!
