jeffo your right I had a very late CE, it had a weird looking Clayton-Dewandre spring brake type set up, and I couldnt work out why they wouldnt lock.
At that time I used to have a drink with one of guys from Ruslits, he was a Commer guru, got me a couple of rebuild kits for the boosters, turrns out they were locked on by ball bearings sliding the shaft and locking in a recess in the shaft.
Jesus, i can see it like it was yesterday, see the pills havent got me either that or im having a sanity break
