This is an excellent Wiki info on the production of hydrogen. It certainly seems a possibility with some process methods.

At the moment any volume production is ridiculous because it takes more energy to produce than it gives. There are many other methods in the works that range from marginal to chemical production (not mining costs) for "free" sourced from natural underground reserves.

It certainly seems a far better option than batteries in cars for mainstream use in the future. I would be worried if I had Lithium shares with a long term view expecting that to be the answer for transport.

What is not talked about is the very poor volume or weight ratio of Hydrogen compared with diesel or petrol. The very best is about 1/4 meaning hydrogen fuel tanks would have to be 4 times bigger to get the same mileage. Not only that but the pressures are extremely high requiring those tanks to be much heavier and the added safety and handling problems associated with those high pressures.

We are not out of the woods yet.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_economy#:...for%20process%20heat .

This is what Air Liquide has to say about it.

energies.airliquide.com/resources-planet...%2075%2Dliter%20tank .

We have known about hydrogen as a useful gas for a couple of hundred years but it is only in the last few decades we have been seriously looking at it as a transport fuel other than for rockets and missiles.

Here is what can go wrong if it is not handled properly. Hard to believe but although the passenger Gondola was underneath only 36 were killed and amazingly 63 survived.

There is thing such as double hydrogen, as in water with HH2o
I think that is how it is written, it is by product of something, cant remember what it is

But when the process of separating the hydrogen from the oxygen you end with nearly twice the hydrogen as normal
Not sure why it hasnt been followed up further
