Most of these dramatic Hume Highway photos are taken going through roadworks or after rare flooding. I suspect a lot of people think the whole road was like this. I believe it was quite easily navigable 99% of the time going back to the early century.

Like today there is no interest in taking photos of vehicles sailing along on a good road so these photo opportunities tend to become the bulk of the records.

1956 was a particularly wet year in NSW (supported by farm rainfall records) and those series of photos were of one nasty low lying stretch. If they weren't road works before they certainly were afterwards!.

Year of the Murray River floods. Levees built with the Grey Fergies.
Road possibly closed at the Albury Wodonga and other crossings.
Wet over large areas - happy ducks.
Mind you, have seen holes big enough to bury a cow in what was a primary interstate highway, even in 1980.
