Would be 4 cylinder 99 cubic inches. Might work acceptably (if slowly) in flat country, wouldn't have been any good in hilly areas, I wouldn't think.

What a wheel spinner. Only 5 seconds longer over the quarter mile than a Morris Minor.

In the mid 70s there was an article in Truck & Bus about a Sydney taxi operator who fitted turbo Gemini motors in place of the stock 253s. All the development work was done on an HJ ute of the same model taxis (four of, IIRC). Fiddling with the boost and tune, the little diesel was coaxed to perform on par with the Holden V8, using a lot less fuel. Further, instead of having a spare engine ready to replace a worn V8, the diesel engine was removed from retiring taxis, to be transplanted into the replacement car.

I noted in the article it says no fan is fitted. I am struggling to believe the radiator without an airflow could keep up in summer in crawling traffic.

Back in th late 70's early 80's Gilbert & Roach (Big Isuzu Dealers in Sydney) used to sell a Kit to put a Isuzu C240 into Holden vehicles.. There were Heaps of  Diesel Powered HJ-X-Z Holden Taxis  around Sydney at the time..
Dad fitted one to a Holden One Tonner He had....

Dunno Lang

Dad had a FE ute with a big Dodge sidevalve in it with no fan, he reckons it never over heated in traffic

I guess traffic was a lot less in Melbourne then
