When I was looking for parts for a lister d I "restored" (more so mechanically rebuilt) a couple years ago I got all my parts from www.stationaryengineparts.com/home.php in the homeland. Can't remember what shipping cost but seem to remember it all arrived a week after ordering. I've had it at vintage engine rally's since and it's always been reliable.

everything thing else seems in good nick, no wear in the bore but lost of black wet carbon crusting in the chamber and on top of the piston. Does that mean too rich/lean valves, load too light?

Runs sweet as it was, and starts easily enough.

Black/wet/hard carbon is oil burning;
Black/soft/fluffy carbon is a rich mixture;
Grey/dry/hard carbon is a lean mixture.

A light load would be less than one third throttle opening at full speed.

If the bore looks ok, the piston and rings could still be worn, or it could be glazed if the wrong oil is being used.

Head gasket is not so good, has delaminated and then some tool bent and split the copper ring.

Emailed Brian Lister Wells, hope he is still in business.

I assume the oil creeps up the barrel past the rings... that would suggest to my ignorance that the rings are not doing their job >:(. (and I did use cheap engine oil)

Anyway, new gasket .... cant rush these things :o

I learnt some years ago, that you can't use normal multigrade (e.g.:20w50) car engine oil in small engines - they will burn lots. I found the "branded" (Briggs, etc.) monograde 30w oil works great in small engines (stays below the rings!).
You may want to find out what sort of oil works well in those older, slower stationary engines.

I am hearing the advice, and thank you all for it:- we have an oil sales specialist in town who I will visit.

I got onto Brian Lister Wells (Often spoken of in TOMM Magazine) by email last night after some google luck. He has got the gasket in stock and I guess it will arrive later in the week. :o

and then the fun can begin. :D
