Making brake lines!

Making brake lines! was created by JBran
So having been looking at some of the tools on eBay, I am wondering why I couldn't just make new hydraulic brake lines (because my truck needs them!) myself? The tools are reasonably inexpensive and I'm sure the tubing wouldn't be too bad either? Are there any laws saying they have to be made by liscenced professionals?

I dont know if making your own brake lines is illegal or not but nobody is going to know who made them if you dont tell.

On the other hand Ive found getting brake lines made by a brake place isnt all that expensive either.

I made all my own brake lines and all you need is a good double flarer and steel tube you can buy from the brake specialists and the fittings as well there not that expensive, I'm a mechanic so I wouldn't think of getting some one else to do these jobs but if you're not comfortable with this it is probably best to get them made by the experts only thing they probably wont bend to the shape you want so don't throw your old lines away

Old trucks will make you poor but not unhappy

If you're not doing it for a living.... :-) then this is probably the most economical way.

measure how much pipe you need, buy it from a brake place. Go home and form it up using a pipe bender, and then take it back for them to flare the ends at the right length.

It has to be steel pipe (not copper) and double flared.

Gday JBran, nice beast you have there. I get my brake lines made by Power Brake on north east road at holden hill. Some of those blokes have been there forever, they're very helpful with old stuff and I've never been disappointed. I take the old ones in as patterns. :)

Hi jbran I replaced all the brake pipes on the Fargo, just bought a small roll of pipe the double flaring was fairly easy, difficult part for me was some of the more fancy bends that were in some of them, keeping the pipe bend round (no kinks) and smooth i found the hardest part.

brake lines by law have to have a double flare the other that they must be made of steel tube //i got knocked back by an engineer years ago with a copper brake line that was made and supplied by a brake place . the explanation from the engineer is that copper under temperature changes can fail thus making brake failure ( hot weather // snow //to close to the exhaust pipe ) i make my own and also do mandril bends not hard just a little practise cheers don

G'day if you are going to bend the pipes up give them about 4-5" of straight pipe at the end to go into their flaring tool.
