I heard a couple of years ago about a tape that can be used as an emergency repair for radiator/heater/fuel hoses. I went to Autobarn, Supercheap and Repco and they had all heard of it but nobody carried it.

The idea is you can wrap this tape around the leak and as it warms it gets harder and more pressure resistant. I thought it may be handy to place a roll or 2 in the toolbox as every time I have carried spare hoses and needed them I have found the spares have deteriorated and leak as well!!

Via the internet I have found out about a select x-treme tape (details at www.ferret.com.au/articles/10/0c011410.asp ). Has anybody had anything to do with it? What are your experiences?

Mrs P. got me some of this today. It was old stock so the guy charged $10.00 for 4 3-metre rolls.

It is meant to hold pressures up to 600psi, temperature range from -54C to +260C and insulates up to 8000 volts. I am not sure if a boiler inspector would approve if used for boiler repairs so you may still need to fix your portable engine using steel JBlair ;D

Hopefully it is a long while before I can report whether it works or not as that means I haven't needed to use it ;)

Personally I wish you well on your trip and that you have no problems. However I hope you do get to try some of this stuff. So as to find out if it is as good as claimed! ;)

Certainly the spec's as quote are very impressive! Could even be usefull on a steam engine. I hasten to point out not on anything to do with the boiler or live high pressure! As I am positive the Boiler inpector would not be impressed if it was found on a boiler! (I certainly wouldn't be impressed or standing anywhere near it if this was so) ;D

bparo,

Hope you got back safely! :)

I found that there is another product very similar to what you where talking about.

It is called Tommy Tape.

See www.therenovatingchannel.com.au/NPDetail.cfm?NP_No=63209 for further information.

Price etc ? I don't know but at least from our view it is from a local supplier namely Westek Electronics Pty Ltd. Based in Melbourne, Australia. Website www.westek.com.au/

Contact (+61) 03 9369 8802

It was mentioned in a recent 4wd Magazine. It indicated it was good for electrical insulator, hole filler and they even suggested as a replacement fan belt!!! ::) Not sure if that was what the manufacture expected! ::) But certainly looks like it is similar stuff to the X-treme tape.
