I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Swishy, I think you are being a little harsh about the Volvo. It still has it's load on board. Maybe it lost it's trailer or maybe it did not have a trailer but had an awfully long rear overhang?

Saw this in France last week.
Two interesting features are the gap filler behind the cab. It is a matched unit to the trailer and actually touches the corners of the trailer which have been rounded to let it ride. Cut back at the top to cater for the prime mover tilting up going across ditches. It is hinged like a door to allow access to the back of the cab.
Second one is the roof wind deflector. It goes from flat on the roof to 45% with an electric screw-jack to perfectly match the trailer height for most efficient air flow.
There are many other air-flow devices in Europe, particularly under trailers. Many have solid skirts almost down to the road between the prime mover and trailer wheels. There are also big fibreglass mouldings that attach behind the front wheels and cover the whole gap over the fuel tank and rear wheels - these make the trucks (almost 100% single drive triple single trailers) look very sporty indeed.

There are quite a few variations on this flash fairing system. This is an ad for the floppy gap filler that closes even the cab tilt cutback on the solid fairing.
This is a Volvo Australia concept but I saw many similar aerodynamic set-ups already on the road in Europe.

I think this is an area that can be improved vastly in the search for economy and I am surprised truck manufacturers are not more active in aerodynamic design.
I remember way back that the blokes hauling pans said the old style with vertical external ribs (bit like a container) took 10mph off the top speed when compared with smooth sided units. This of course was in the 100-200hp engine days. Now you would just put your foot down further, maintain speed, but guzzle 10% more fuel.
Volvo Trucks debuted a truck design this year that the company claims requires 30 percent less fuel than a comparable vehicle. Based on the body of an FH 420, the concept was built to have a tractor and trailer that improved aerodynamic efficiency by 40 percent. Side skirts, trailer-back spoilers and wraparound fairings helped, as did tires with lower rolling resistance. The concept model, which was tested in Sweden last fall, is 2.2 tons lighter than a conventional rig. It won’t be produced commercially, but the ideas behind it are already being worked into other Volvo vehicles, according to the company.
And even further into the future:

Volvo drivers don't fight in Pubs. They go outside and come to blows.
