and save yourself a lot of grief. 525 AUD isn't a bad price if it's half decent quality, and after you (and your mates who'll be borrowing it) have done a few brake jobs it will have paid for itself. I've done several hundred truck brake jobs over the years, a few with the plywood / sheet iron and grease, and I'll go with the dolly every time. If you haven't got a smooth hard floor you'll need a sturdy sheet of plywood to run the dolly on, but it won't be all greased up when you're done. Using the dolly lets you make skinny little adjustments and helps all the kit slide back together without bashing your seals or your knuckles.

You mentioned that you backed the snail adjusters off. If this is the same as S cams back the slack adjuster all the way such that the rollers are caught in the pockets. There will quite likely be a ridge on the inside of the drum and the more space you have between it and the brake shoe the easier it will come apart. If you are re-using the drum the angle grinder will trim the ridge off.

One advantage of using a dolly is that there's a lot less dis-assembly. If you have a helper, a piece of heavy shaft stock centered on the axle cap and smacked briskly with the ten pound hammer adds bounce and helps to pop the axle loose. Set a drain pan (plastic milk bottle with the side cut out works well) in the wheel to catch the oil.

Whichever way you do it, have fun and stay outta the hot sun. Follow Swishy's advice re: beer.

All the best,

Mark
