Part F
Early 1950ish
Bill bought an articulted bus
in his spare time he ripped all the seats out and made 3 rooms in the bus with a bedroom each end and with a kitchen in the middle by the door
he used it to take Holidays @ Xmas and Easter ... always on the bank of the Murray river @ Howlong
after a few years of the holiday bus he needed to store it somwhere else cause he was running out of room to get all the trucks & trailers off the road @ night
an operator of one of his customers was telling him that he was down on his luck with no where to live with Mrs & 4 young kids
so Bill offfered the big bus to him and he pay it off. Bill Delivered it to the caravan park on princes hwy Springvale and it was used for a few years
Bill often asked for some payment but he could never afford it. So Bill told him th@ he will come and repossess it and tow it away
He rolled up one day in the white to tow away his bus but seing the blokes wife and all the kids n thort this is tooo hard
so he abanded the idea and left the bus and thort th@ joker needs it more than him

Originally the bus was used to transport troops from Portsea, Mornington or Melbourne

Great Stuff Swishman
My Grandfather who was a truck driver most of his life built himself a fifth wheeler, they weren't called that back then, towed it with a little Inter at a guess around 4 or 5 ton

36 foot long, parked the Morris Minor in the back and caravan up the front

Huge plans to travel all over this wide brown land he and Grandma had been around towing a caravan already but he was gunna do it in style

Guessing the late 60s or early 70s, thinking more late 60s

Anyway they (Pa and Grandma) were on the morning of the maiden voyage and Grandma went ass up on the ice in with a heavy frost (pretty sure thats right)
Anyway she hurt her back and could never ride in the truck
Fifth wheeler caravan got backed in the shed and never left the shed for 25 or 30 years when he sold it

We all have these great plans in one degree or another but they for the most part they go pare shaped

Great stories Swishman, give till it hurts, hmmm were have I read that before

Thanx Guys

Part G

Early 50's Bill got a Low Loader made of his own design
a Low deck tandem axles with single tyres 4 of 900x20
the front gooseneck was removable and held on the deck with 2 pins on each side

over the years there was lots of modification to sed trailer
A mechanic @ the time altered the RSend to slope down to near the ground
a couple of blocks of wood the idea being to drive a roller beteen the wheels to load on to the deck of the low loader
there were a few bitchumen road contractors th@ had Barber Green or Blawknox spreaders plus steel drum rollers and multi tyred rollers
first time they atempted to load a steel drum roller it ran out of traction .. steel on steel going up the rear tail frame ramp
so the operator of the roller went back and got a run at it with a bit of momentum.. he misqued with the steering and BANG straight thru one of Bills new tyres
He told our mechanic at the time to cut the basted off and fit a normal 2 rows of 4 trye axles and tail frame to suit
With this trailer Granpas Axe comes to mind
later on all the crossmembers between the main deck beams were cut out and a 5/8" steel plate was placed on the main deck beams lower flange to cart high loads
and all the cross members were bolted in to support the timber deck

Next mod was to remove all of the cross members on the tail frame and replaced with heavy duty crossmembers placed at axle height
the 'S" cam brakes were swaped from left to right etc and the brake air boosters placed under the axle
the idea being we could load high concrete panels straight thru from the rear HD bumper to the front of the trailer

we added a Leaning prop and acrow prop to support the concrete panel

Not dun yet
next we redesigned the detachable gooseneck and made it user friendly by useing the trucks winch

Re Cobba and 180 query on lug tyres on the NR Mack.
Safer under braking is the main factor, and wear as 180 said.
Very careful with tractors on hills, tyre with least traction will
spin backwards so control is lost. Tricky! Paul.

That gizmo is the insulator or bushing off a high voltage and no doubt high current transform or circuit breaker

Must be very high voltage by the length of the bushing

Swishman I take it the float ended up on 15 inch tyres ? At this stage anyway ?

IA very handy bit of gear if one had the need for such a thing, that trailer sits pretty low all around
