Great snaps Rex & Swishy -
I particularly like the picture of the common old broken Volvo box trailer spring, seen them break gazillions of times - Hmm.

Great variatiion of fleet and makes used in a very interesting operation. As Rex had previously mentioned they choose the best vehicle for the application and leave the KW.s on the flat bits so they don't break..

Hi,
Re: dragging heavy stuff up the hill (Post 171646 above).

I think it was in something like a "Manurer Happens" or "Caption This" where Salvage/ Tow Trucks or other helpful fellows chain up to a distressed chappie in a ditch or bog and to the amusement of all but the victim, neatly remove entire front axle assemblies or other important bits from the imperilled vehicle.

Now, remembering Swishys deboging advice at the time "drag the load and the prime mover will follow". . . would not hauling the load up the hill through the prime mover not run the risk of damaging some aspect of its chassis set up?

emmk,

Swishy mate.
Generally speaking gross weights of let's say 80 tonnes will normally make their way up a reasonable incline, like the one in the photo you have shown.
Now we must return to the classroom and take a moment or two as it is necessary to fully understand what happens when weights increase, above all else the one thing all trucks have in common TYRES.
The first and basic lesson is how much drawbar pull can a prime mover achieve with the weight applied to the tyres and the surface conditions it is operating on, in a perfect situation dry bitumen you will achieve around 80% of the weight applied to the drive, 18.50 X .08 = 14.80 tonnes.
Without going into some long winded time wasting exercise, unless I have missed something all trucks have pneumatic tyres, so it matters little what the badge on the front says....................
WHEN YOU BREAK TRACTION YOU ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
On the other hand our European trucks have demonstrated the ability to break traction, having never owned a Kenworth i must ask the question can they break traction ?

Yup
With 'V' Bus ............................... YOUR NOT GOING ANYWHERE
U need to increase the foot print in an attempt to not break traction
The Yanks generally use bigger tyres
but to pull a hill on the last kilometer on site U could try dropping the drive tyre air pressure to increase the foot print
Butt
No Guarantee this could/would/should solve the traction problem

ALSO

ifn eye'm allowed an also
on site @ bottom hill load a few more t counterweight ovr the drive

But me jist an armchair critic kno it all LOL
n guess U kno it all as U B @ the coal face

LOL
