I CAME INTO THIS WORLD WITH NOTHING & STILL HAVE MOST OF IT.........................

I used to be a truck driver,
but i am now not a truck driver ,
on a good day i can remember
that i used to be a truck driver.

Billy, the heavy haul vid was great, but comparing the geniuses at Mammoet to the idiots who were responsible for the Strick Cabunder is like apples and oranges. The heavy haulers move at a walking pace and they are the traffic. They don't worry about weather or obstacles, and every contingency is planned for. The greedy bastards who were perfectly willing to unleash the cabunder on North America's motoring public fully intended it to motor along the public way carrying heavy loads at highway speeds in all weather conditions and were oh so sure that a driver wouldn't have any more problems with it than he would with a conventional or a cabover. It's worthy of note that the only one I ever got a close look at (a prototype -- I don't think they ever did go into production) was pulled into a rest area in Connecticut on a rainy night because the driver couldn't see a thing -- the mirrors were useless because of spray off the wheels and any time he was passed by a car or truck the wipers were buried. Just imagine trying to run in the snow. I got a chance to sit in the thing, for about thirty seconds. I'm not claustrophobic, but I swear, I'd have been further from the asphalt in an MG Midget.

The Teamsters Union was a pretty sleasy outfit at the top (much of the leadership did jail time for corruption back when) but the best thing they did in that era, when they still had some clout, was to announce to the industry that no Teamster would ever drive a cabunder. Coupled with the fact that the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration was giving the beady eyeball to the unit pretty well put paid to it. Here's a link:

I don't know if those car haulers pictured in the thread were in Austalia or not, but if they are someone should lay for 'em with a plasma cutter and call Simms. That's definitely NOT the kind of Yanky Iron you want on your roads.

There's my rant for the month. Cheers, all!
