Disastrous news to day...…………..
………………….The General Gordon pub at Sydenham (Sydney ) burnt down …..
This old pub was the watering hole for the boys from KW St Peters in its day, as it was just a couple of blocks away.
It was here that the days operations were discussed in great length, some times right up till closing time.
It would great to know all the stories that eminated from here.....
From simple things like mooning the barmaids..... a few pool cues getting broken over heads....
a bloke getting tossed out for riding his bicycle aroung the bar top....
One day half of the workshop personel nearly got the sack, but the chiefs settled for demoting the leading hand,
all because a mass counter lunch sort of extended to the rest of the afternoon..............
The saloon bar was the subject of a few questional episodes on the odd occasion too..........
Also quite a few KW customers whiled away a bit of time while waiting for truck repairs to be completed..........
Yeah....a lot of people will have some great memories from that joint..........
So whether it is re built (i doubt it) or something else pops up in its place, remains to be seen.........

We wanna hear a bit more about the shenanigans of the old watering hole!
Can't just leave it hanging like that!

I recognise the Billy's Pub sign: Calgary, Canada.
General Gordon had a large painting of a tram crossing the railway bridge and passing the hotel.
It had been taken from a photo by prolific photographer Noel Reed. His collection dated back to colour photos through the 1950s, and he posts them very generously in tram groups.
This one had been filched. We all thought that he should be entitled to a free counter lunch some day, maybe a barbecue.

16.4.14 message: Some time in the distant past, TDU photographically recorded how one of our esteemed member’s photos of an R-class tram crossing the overbridge at Sydenham station and with the General Gordon Hotel in the background, had been painted (with a minor destination alteration if I recall) and displayed at the Hotel.
Yesterday, as part of the ARHS/NSW Luncheon Club, I had the opportunity to dine at this hotel.
Regretfully, this painting is no longer on display and the current Mine-Host has no knowledge of what happened to it. Apparently the Hotel has had a turbulent history in recent times, with Receivership, transfers of owners, etc. Can someone with greater computer knowledge than I, locate within the TDU Archives Noel’s original photo and the photo of the painting?

Not too much for me to tell Dave..... in those days I travelled by train to KW .. so only had a narrow window to have an ale...….
But walked past the GG morning and night to catch the train at Sydenham...…

Although I did spot this ….FWIW.....

Just as an aside...…..how would todays Sydney drivers share the roads with trams as in days gone by...…
maybe the light rail might be interesting..... ????????

He did a lot of modifactions to the gear levers on the last of the Comet 8 wheelers you drove at zacubra bricks .He had a workshop at Wetheral Park .Comet had a sattelite depot at Prospect and used to run the 8 wheelers to Brisbane . He modified the gear levers so the range changers would not hit the Engine cover and tear the blue vinyl covering :cheer:
