Swishy,

I know the feeling. Atleast while they are picking on us with our externally oiled diesel outboards there leaving the Bedford fellas alone.
I dont care what anyone says there is nuffin better than a well tuned 6V-92 on a crisp still morning in the mountains.....and a close second, making a 6V-53 bark in the Burnley tunnel ! 8-)

Other names for em are :
Green grenades.
Externally oiled diesel outboards.
Under bonnet Bamix.
Bird scarer.
Kamikazi ( 4-53 )

Now back to business who's got the answers to the remaining questions.

I was told that a bloke in Narromine NSW had a GM, he would say just put a liter of oil in it and poor the rest all over the motor because that's where it will end up. ;)

Monty,

My next statement could get some disagreement but here goes.
If you assemble Detroit seals, gaskets and joints with the correct sealing products, quality parts and are careful it is easy to get a Detroit leak free.
You will get oil piddling out of the airbox drains but thats the nature of the beast.
Just about all the oil leaks on customer engines Ive had to fix over the years have already had someone have a go at it with silastic or the surfaces wernt clean to start with and so on.
If done right you can stop em leaking. Im not saying its easy though. You have to be very thourough in your prep and assembly...almost pedantic if you want no leaks.
They came from the factory without leaks..its only after someone plays with em they leak.
The old 71's with the pressed metal valve covers are a classic. You get a weap and the first you do is ?...give the thumb nuts a bit more of a crank...doesnt fix it..give it some more...once you change the shape of the cover you have stuffed it completely now and even with a new cork gasket it'll still leak, guarentee it. Part of the reason they went to the cast ali covers with the rubber gasket on the later donks.
Again my two cents worth ! ;)

Now have you answered the remaining questions yet ?

Barry thats right RTFM, this is the bible to things.

if you do it properly the 1st time, it will be the last time you will need to touch it.

the same fella that told me about the GM in Narromine has a Land rover 4WD would take it to the mechanic to have it fixed, it would come back F*&ked, so he and his father got a manual, follow it to a T and has worked flawlessness ever since.

Life has come back to the Google Button

G'day Baz,
I know there' an 8v53 ( my manual told me so , though I 've never seen one ) and given GM / Detroit diesel's propensity for stickin ' engine blocks together, I'd say a 16v53.
I'm sure you mentioned some big un's on Barrow island you'd worked on but I couldn't find the thread.
Could you also tell me what brand Sealant/ "gasket goo" you have had success with in putting oil leak free Detroits together.
I remember when I was an apprentice Cat "red " gasket sealant was the "holy grail" of sealants, but that's over thirty years ago , I am sure there have been improvements since then !
As I have said before that Wabco 333FT twin power scraper with its two 12V71 T's and straight through stacks, as gargled its way from idle, to a thunderous screaming bellow at full throttle remains burned into my brain as my all time great Detroit diesel memory ! :o
