Thanks muchly werkhorse some solid information there
I have been able to source an almost identical booklet for the Austin 2-45F, 3-45F models, which compared to the Leyland offering clearly indicates the obvious continuation of the original design.
Apart from the change from generator to alternator, I notice that the rear axle ratio for the 2.5 ton Leyland was 4,585 to 1, whereas the 2.5 ton Austin was 5.714 to 1; quite a significant difference I would have thought.
I wonder how the 20" wheels I will be putting on my 2.5 ton diff (to match the bigger wheels necessitated by the larger 3.5 ton front brakes I have fitted) will compare on the road?
The Leyland booklet indicates road speeds per 1000 revs (not shown on the Austin booklet) notably 19.8 mph for the 16" wheels, and 17.5 mph for the 20" wheels; am I missing something here - I would have thought the larger wheel would give the higher speed (all other variables being equal)?
Perhaps some of the smart types out there can calculate what the effective road speed would be for my arrangement?
Hint, hint all you gear ratio/tyre rolling circumference boffins.

I dunno about all that, but I remember the Austin /Leyland axle ratio was 5.83 or thereabouts. The oz made diesel Terrier used the same diff centre and ratio.I wont comment on the pathetic quality of the diff, but skinny carrier bearings failed regularly, busting teeth. To find a S/H Terrier diff was impossible,so I looked out for the 6 stud Austin axles.

Thanks Swishy, using that formula (without removing sox n undies ) it gives 19.792mph per 1000 revs which is basically what the Leyland info said for the 16" wheels - so I guess I can call it a day at that and be happy
Do you have the TIRE LOADED RADIUS info for 16" tyres also?
John K - have no fear, I have absolutely no intention of changing the diff , mine is a budget truck!
Claire - I tried that item number without success

My Terrier, when it was on the road, cruised along nicely at 100ks with the 5.8 and 16x8.25 tyres. The diff was crap ,though, and maybe I should have checked it when the diff oil turned to silverfrost. But,mechanics vehicle, and all that.Anyhoo,I ended up fitting a set of old Toyota FA 90 gears to the Austin bits, which it still has.But it aint going nowhere, bit like me.

I've had the metallic diff oil - but it was pinion bearings (on the ASW). Not bad for a diff I got out of the bush, I suppose. I got 10,000 miles out of it. One used pinion bearing later and all is good.
