Bit like the V8 diesel Landcruisers, or at least when they first came out, pull the engine out to replace a starter motor.

You can swap a 1UZ starter in around 2 hours, same family of engine as the Landcruser.
If you think about it how often do you need to swap a starter.
The problem with these engines is they don't wear out. 6-700,000K's is not an unreasonable expectation from these.

Zuffen that is so true
I dont think most of actually remember how badly built things once were
We dont hear anyone say "I had a good run out of it, got a 100,000 mile with out putting touching it with a spanner"
The motors are just that well built today, the metals, the tolerances, the oils we use, the air filters
The truth we have warranties on motors that last longer than we used to get out of them
Paul

One rail line through Crystal Brook, carries ALL east-west and north-south rail traffic. Noteworthy that the original steel bridge was deemed unsuitable for the increasing tonnage passing over it and a stronger bridge with similar concrete plinths supporting the steel bridge was built alongside the original. Unfortunately the creek beneath flooded badly and one of the concrete plinths collapsed as a goods train went over it! This was all replaced with a large cylindrical affair instead of a concrete plinth (I'll get a picture of it tomorrow) and was eventually back in action, with no more dramas since.
That in itself is only half the story, as the quickest way to keep trains moving was to transfer the traffic over the old "unsuitable" bridge while things were fixed. :pinch:
It still stands beside the new bridge - perhaps it was left there in case they need it again!? !
PS Swishy's picture reminds me of the old car magazine section named "Rust in peace."
