I wonder if that washout is the cause of the derailment? They are talking about 200,000 litres of Sulphuric acid spilt.

That 200,000 ltr figure was given as the total load - not the spillage. The actual load figure has since been updated to 800,000lts odd (26 tankers) - with the actual spillage as being very minimual. Reports say 1 wagon with big split and a couple (literally) with very minor leaks. And a bit of fuel from the loco.

Either way - all will have to be drained before any attempt is made to stand them up again. Since these 'acid' trains have been running (my guess 20 odd years now) this must be the 4 or 5 major incident they have had with them.

I was hearing it on the ABC radio news. The figure went from 30,000 to 200,000. Even 30,000 is huge. Hope it's actually less.
