My dad has told me stories when I me pretty sure it was R Soles circus came around the elephants would just stand on the floats with a chain hooked to one leg

Yes, saw a flat bed circus truck with an elephant on the back, mid 60's, crossing Tallebudgera Creek on the Gold Coast.
Elephant reached out and grabbed a pole, street light or such, can't remember.
Pulled her up, big lean on the truck until the keepers gave the poor animal some whacks on the legs.

Gee, that brings back memories. I was taken to "Bullens African Lion Safari" somewhere around Brisbane for my 10th birthday (1980).
Been gone a long time. I still remember spotting a Studebaker the same as ours on the way home.
Someone in this film was doing alright, driving a Cadillac!
