I was telling my 95 year old Aunt, who worked for Sole Bros and Perry's Circuses, about the elephant on Swishy's truck.
She then told me she used to drive the elephant truck during the war.
Apparently the brakes failed one day and she ran it into an embankment to stop just out of Young and the truck was left there as parts were simply not available and the elephants then had to walk to the next town.
She then went on to tell me about a Bull Elephant going nuts and killing the trainer and the workers having to poison it with arsenic treated apples to kill it. The town wouldn't allow the elephant to be buried so two of the crew stayed behind for 2 weeks burning the carcase. Damned big BBQ!
Circuses can no longer have Bull elephants in Australia.
