...these were beautiful big jiggers supplied under the US miltary designation M1A1 wrecker/refueller...which encompassed a range of manufacturers all competing for the wartime contracts....

...those front mounted Cleco Gruss oleo pneumatic shock absorbers were reserved for only the biggest rigs that the US military specified....Beiderman, REO and Diamond T included....

The handle has me tossed at the moment. As suggested above maybe an inertia starter but the handle does not seem big enough.

We had a DC-3 in the PNG Air Transport Squadron that had one engine with a normal electric starter and one with an inertia starter (normally spun up electrically). We did a manual demo on the inertia starter for everyone and the handle had about an 18" crank and the bloke swinging it out on the wing really had to get it wound up.

This does not look big enough.

If it is just a gear because the engine is so big - half the effort = double the speed then the cranker's arms would be a spinning blur.

What about just a simple right angle drive. These big trucks had all sorts of heavy gear on them and if it had a big winch on the front (as the aircraft recovery versions had) it would block a straight run for the handle into the crank pulley.
