NMP. Ack Wilton's Leyland Super Hippo. After an engine failure Ack fitted a 350 Cummins . There was a story about Ack and his Leylands in Truck and Bus magazine when they had a regular section called the Leylanders

What on earth is that Police car? A Gemini or Corrolla?

I thought Gemini too but the badge does not look right, more like a Mazda badge. Doubt it belonged to the Highway Patrol.

That has the last version of Super Hippo/Badger cab and were fitted with the 690 engine. The Leyland 690 was a 680 fitted with turbo (not to be confused with AEC 690) and had a habit of blowing head gaskets if worked hard.

Slightly off topic, but I seem to recall some of the early Bedford cabovers fitted with the smaller (460??) Leyland engine?
Both single drive p/m and rigids.
I could well be wrong, but when the Sydney truck show used to operate out of Yennora woolstores all those years ago, York Eng had a rigid with a lazy set up, long tray maybe 8 or so pallets long, had a 5 speed (maybe a Turner??) and a 2 or 3 speed joey.
Cabin may have been jacked up a bit higher than the normal petrol/diesel cab height, also something slightly different about the hatches behind the rear of the doors and around the back of the cab, maybe something to do with cooling?
Have an idea also it may have been sold post-show to the Government mob, Department of Supply, possibly looking as a replacement for those Commers that used to pull around those towed trailers. Long time ago, early seventies.

Bedfords used Leylands before their own diesels came out ....EO370,and maybe theEO 350 too....both earlier versions of the 400 of later years......there was also a 375 Leyland in the same series.Really good motors ,unfortunately the Bedford diesels didint have much of a name ,but there were lots about.

I recall when Transfields sold up in Richlands ,just down the road from Mack, they had a really nice long bonnet 691 Hippo ......like new it was ...unusual for Transfield.......only went for $2500,but I didnt bother with it ,as I couldnt see any resale for it.......Next I saw it was in poor condition towing a trailer doing demolitions .....then in the scrapyard with a rod out.....all in about 12 months.

Yes, thought it looked like the last run of bonneted Hippos.
Turbo 680 with R/R box, big old Leyland reduction hubs.
And yes, some 680 turbo installs were a disaster in the bonneted Hippo. They fitted the Ergo type engine with rear mounted turbo hard against the firewall. Got way too hot and cooked the engine oil.
Then they fitted the central turbo Industrial engine style which did work better.
Left and right hand engines were also fitted, some really odd vehicles put together towards the end.
Cummins re-power was more popular than repairing the poor old 680 block.
No idea how they managed to sell such old fashioned cab trucks into the 70’s.
Even made a Flintstone look spaceage.
